10 Style Rules We’re Following This Year (And the Brands We’re Relying on to Do It)

January always feels like a reset. Not in an extreme, “new year, new wardrobe” way — but more of a quiet recalibration. It’s the month where we step back, look at what we actually wear, and decide what we want our clothes to do for us this year.

At Dotique, we’re not interested in fast trends or throwaway fashion. We believe in building wardrobes that feel good, last well, and genuinely work for real women and real lives. So these are the 10 style rules we’re following this year, along with the brands we keep coming back to because they get it right.

1. Comfort Is Non-Negotiable

If something isn’t comfortable, it won’t get worn — no matter how nice it looks on the hanger. This year, comfort is the baseline, not a bonus.

We’re prioritising soft, breathable fabrics, elasticated waists that don’t dig in, and cuts that move with you. Brands like Red Button and MAC do this brilliantly, especially when it comes to jeans that feel good all day without losing their shape. For everyday tops and knits, Fransa and Soya Concept are staples we rely on again and again.

2. Every Piece Has to Earn Its Place

We’re being much more intentional about what we add to our wardrobes. Before buying something new, we ask: Can I wear this at least three ways? Can I style it across different seasons?

That’s why we love versatile brands like Part Two and Oui — their pieces layer beautifully, work casually or dressed up, and slot easily into an existing wardrobe rather than competing with it.

3. Fit Comes Before the Size Label

This year, we’re letting go of the number inside the garment. A great fit is what makes an outfit look polished and feel confident — not the size tag.

Brands like Joseph Ribkoff and Frank Lyman are particularly good at this, with clever tailoring and stretch that flatters without feeling restrictive. When something fits well, you stand differently, move differently, and feel more yourself — and that’s always worth prioritising.

4. Dresses Are the Easiest Way to Look Put Together

On days when you don’t know what to wear, a dress is the answer. One piece, minimal effort, maximum impact.

We’re leaning into midi lengths, soft sleeves, and flattering waistlines from brands like Hope & Ivy, Vilagallo, and Place du Soleil. These are dresses you can wear to lunch, to work, or out for the evening — just by changing shoes and accessories.

5. Neutrals Build the Foundation

A strong wardrobe starts with neutrals. Shades like navy, cream, camel, black and soft grey make everything else easier to style.

This is where brands like MAC, Paige, and American Vintage really shine. Once you have a solid neutral base, adding colour feels intentional rather than overwhelming — and you’ll find you get far more wear out of everything.

6. Texture Adds Interest Without Dating Quickly

Instead of chasing trends, we’re focusing on texture this year — pieces that feel special without being flashy.

Think broderie, embroidery, soft knits, subtle metallics, and natural fibres. Brands like Elisa Cavaletti, Vilagallo, and Monari do this beautifully, creating pieces that feel interesting but still timeless.

7. Clothes Have to Work for Real Life

We’re choosing clothes that suit how we actually live — not an idealised version of our lives.

That means fabrics that don’t crease easily, silhouettes you can sit, walk and move in, and pieces that feel just as good at 9am as they do at 5pm. Gym + Coffee has become a real favourite for relaxed days, travel, and layering, while Naya offers easy shapes that work beautifully for everyday wear.

8. One Good Piece Can Carry an Outfit

You don’t need a full new outfit to feel stylish. Often, all it takes is one really good piece — a great jacket, a statement blouse, or a beautifully cut skirt.

We love investing in standout pieces from Maison Hotel, Fabienne Chapot, or Joseph Ribkoff, then keeping everything else simple. These are the items that make people stop you and ask, “Where’s that from?”

9. Compliments Are a Style Clue

If you’re consistently complimented on a certain colour, shape or style, pay attention. That’s your personal style talking.

Whether it’s the fit of Red Button jeans, the prints from Vilagallo, or the clean lines of MAC, those repeat compliments are a sign you’re onto something — and worth leaning into it more.

10. Dress for How You Want to Feel

More confident. More comfortable. More like yourself.

Clothes should support your day, not complicate it. This year, we’re dressing with intention — choosing pieces that make us feel good when we catch our reflection, walk into a room, or simply go about our everyday lives.
